I was at the borders of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand & discover that I can take a short trip across the Mekong River to Laos, without a visa.

      I don't know why China translates Laos as 老撾 not 寮國. This bothers me.    And this border sign break WELCOME this word as WEL and COME.    I don't know what does Donsaisland mean.

    YES, it is 老撾 not 寮國. I find it puzzling too. WELCOME become WEL and COME, I think is they try to fit it on that signpost. The place is actually called Don Sao Island. The o is hidden due to the shadow.

    Well, why as we were young in school Laos translate as 寮國 not 老撾?     I just found something funny.    I don't know what is Don Sao Island.  So I did Google translate it gave me Don Sao Island = 唐嫂島.  This makes my day.  唐嫂 is a rich woman.  She owns an island.
